Larry Ellison

Larry Ellison's relationship with religion is best understood through his upbringing rather than through active religious practice as an adult. Born in New York City in 1944, he was adopted as an infant by his aunt and uncle, Lillian and Louis Ellison, and raised in Chicago. His adoptive family was Jewish, and he grew up within a Jewish cultural environment. Although he was exposed to Jewish traditions and values during his childhood, Ellison has not been publicly known as an observant or practicing member of the faith in adulthood. Instead, he has generally been described as having a secular outlook, with his public identity shaped more by entrepreneurship, technology, and intellectual curiosity than by organized religion.

While religion has not been a prominent feature of Ellison's public life, aspects of his upbringing may have influenced his perspective. Growing up in a working-class Jewish household in Chicago exposed him to values often associated with that community, including the importance of education, resilience, and perseverance. Ellison has spoken more frequently about the impact of his adoptive parents, his unconventional childhood, and the challenges he faced than about religious beliefs themselves. His willingness to question authority, embrace risk, and pursue ambitious goals appears to have been driven more by personal philosophy and experience than by religious doctrine.

As one of the world's most successful technology entrepreneurs, Ellison has rarely discussed faith as a motivating force behind his decisions or leadership style. His philanthropy has likewise focused primarily on science, medicine, education, and technological innovation rather than religious institutions or faith-based causes. Through organizations such as the Larry Ellison Foundation and the Ellison Institute ecosystem, his charitable efforts emphasize solving practical global challenges through research and innovation. Taken together, the available public record suggests that religion provided a cultural backdrop during Ellison's early years but has played a relatively limited and largely private role in shaping his public career and philanthropic legacy.

First Break
Larry Ellison's first major break came when he worked at Ampex Corporation (met Bob Miner and Ed Oates) on a database project for the CIA codenamed "Oracle". Inspired by an IBM research paper on relational databases, this project gave him the technical foundation and vision to co-found Software Development Laboratories (later Oracle) in 1977, securing early contracts that launched the company's hyper-growth.

State and Local Incentives

Oracle’s Nashville headquarters project has a $240 million state/local incentive package listed in Good Jobs First’s Subsidy Tracker.

The structure is important:

Oracle agreed to front $175 million for public infrastructure around its campus, including streets, a riverfront park/greenway and a pedestrian bridge.
Nashville agreed to redirect 50% of the incremental property-tax revenue generated by the development for up to 25 years to reimburse Oracle for eligible infrastructure costs. The project was expected to create thousands of jobs and generate substantial new tax revenue.

Government contracts

Oracle also has substantial federal contracts. For example, Oracle America alone has about $791 million in federal contract obligations in the current USAspending-derived record, with the Department of Defense accounting for most of it. These are contracts, not grants.

Recent VA awards to Oracle Health Government Services include individual obligations exceeding $200 million.

The Larry Ellison Foundation Donations and Assets

During 2024, the foundation awarded only 1 grant for $69,962,501 million to The Tony Blair Institute.  Per the site, The Tony Blair Institute, known by its trade name the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and the abbreviation TBI, is a British think tank and consultancy that advises governments and political leaders on strategy, policy and technology.
